    Putting Your Garden to Rest During Winter

    As the days cool and winter draws near, I like to put my garden to rest. Of course, we grow some kale here and there and usually our garlic is planted in October, but I use December/January/February to really take a step back from gardening. As much as I love gardening, it’s nice to have a respite from it, though I typically use that time daydreaming and planning the next garden. We start the process of putting our garden to rest by removing any diseased or mildewed plants. We take extra precautions by burning any diseased material.     The first time I had pepper jelly, it was served to me at a work potluck, topping a block of softened cream cheese with some bacon bits and spring onion. Amazing. The second time I had it was smeared over tuna – a dish that I created based on something my mom had at a friend’s house.     I feel like people who don’t like okra are the ones who have only experienced it being slimy and gross, similar to snot. Not very appetizing to most of us, right? But I LOVE okra. I love the gorgeous flowers that appear on okra plants. I love how quickly they grow. I love eating them fresh, pickled, preserving them. The only thing I don’t like about okra is how the plants always make my arms break out when I’m picking.     I have a book addiction. It started when I was just a child myself – we had a spare bedroom at our house with built-in bookshelves and I made it almost a mission to fill them. When a used bookstore opened locally, the children’s section was well stocked thanks to me. I want to make sure that my son enjoys reading.
